NEW PRODUCT DESIGN
FORM - FIT - FUNCTION • The product should be both simple and easy to use as it provides its benefits to the consumer. • Consideration must be given to both current requirements and relatively unknown future applications. • In general, realistic thought should be present at the "onset of design" in order to eliminate "early need" for product modification. • The proper design of a new product requires that those involved consider the following twelve points: PRIMARY DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS 1) How the functional mechanism is constructed and where it is placed within the "body" of the product. 2) The size, shape, and weight the design takes should be both practical to manufacture and pleasing to the eye. 3) How the power requirements will be met to insure proper operation of the product. 4) The determination of the type of materials that will be used in the construction of the product and what tooling will be required for manufacturing. 5) How the design package will interface or connect with its operating environment and how it "mates" with related items involved with product operation. 6) Careful consideration must be given regarding the manufacturing of engineering models, prototype, and pre-production and production units. OTHER SUPPORTING DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS 7) Instructions should be provided pertaining to how to properly use the product along with specific cautions or warnings regarding improper use of the products. 8) An explanation should be provided as to how the product works with specific emphasis as to any unusual aspects or technology involved. 9) Care, cleaning and maintenance of product should be easy to maintain requiring simple methods. 10)Consideration of what kind of warranties will apply and protection against misuse. Protection regarding product liability and the type and amount of insurance. 11)Benefits derived from using the product should be listed to contrast either current methods or existing competitive products. 12)Finally, how the package requirement will be met. (Retail, wholesale, Internet, television, catalog and specialty sales).
